Festival Italiano Special: Food and rituals of Luna Nuova – Exhibition of the Sardinian nuptial breads and Launeddas (Sardinian flute) music
Visit the Luna Nuova Stand at the Festival Italiano to see these beautiful nuptial breads and learn about their history and meaning. A cultural delegation is coming all the way from Sardinia to present the Sardinian art of baking nuptial breads to and play the traditional flute Launeddas.
The Sardinian nuptial bread is rich of symbolism. Traditionally a bride had to demonstrate her baking knowledge, which was passed down from generation to generation. The future wife also had to prove her artistic skills in shaping and decorating the bread.
Each different shape of nuptial bread carry its own symbolism, and the heart shape is almost always present and offered to the couple to be hung on the headboard of the wedding bed.
Nuptial breads would be prepared and packed three days before the wedding by the bride to be, her girlfriends and her female relatives, surrounded of Launeddas musician and dancing.

Il pane nuziale sardo è ricco di simbologia. Innanzitutto la sposa deve dimostrare la conoscenza della panificazione. Le donne sono le uniche a poter ereditare questa sapienza. Inoltre la sposa deve dimostrare la sua abilità nella manifestazione plastica-decorativa, quindi per il suo naturale gusto estetico. Tre giorni prima del matrimonio questo pane viene preparato e confezionato dalla sposa e dalle sue amiche e parenti.
Le svariate forme del pane nuziale sono ricche di simbologia, il cuore, quasi sempre presente, viene offerto agli sposi per essere appeso a capo del letto nuziale.
Durante i tre giorni di preparazione del pane non mancano mai la musica delle launeddas e i balli.

Embassy Film Series: Il Sole Dentro

The 2016 Italian Embassy Film Series is on again this Friday, 6pm at the University of Auckland (Building: Arts 1, second floor, Lecture Theatre 220).
This is a free event and we look forward to seeing you there!
Il Sole Dentro (Bright Flight) 2012, a deeply touching film directed by Paolo Bianchini which tells the tale of two stories. 1999 – Yaguine and Fode’, two Guinean teenagers write a letter to describe the situation of all the children in their country “To their Excellencies the members and leaders of Europe”. Their plan is to deliver it by hand so they hide in the cargo compartment of a plan to Brussels. 2009 – Thabo, a teenager taken from his African village for his promising football player abilities, gets thrown out on the street once he is no longer deemed up to standard. Rocco, his training team mate, finds him and together they start their journey from Europe to Africa to return to N’Dola where Thabo’s family lives.
Parking: the Owen Glenn Building, via Grafton Rd opposite Stanley St, has five storey of parking and a flat rate from 5pm; it is very handy to the University.
