CineClubDante!

We’d like to remind you of our CineClubDante, a course on Italian Classic Cinema that will take place, once per month during this winter at Dante’s.
Last month we watched “Miracolo a Milano” and talked about the Italian Neorealismo. This time we will watch another masterpiece of Vittorio De Sica, “Ieri, oggi e domani” with Sofia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.
The movie will have English subtitles.
This is a language class, a fascinating journey through the history of Italian Cinema and a way to go deeper into the Italian culture and improve your language skills.
Come and watch the movie, and talk about it with our teacher Matteo Telara.
The class will take place Thursday the 17th, at 1.30pm, at our premises in Freemans Bay.
“Ieri, oggi e domani” is a 1963 comedy anthology film, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 37th Academy Awards. The film consists of three short stories about couples in different parts of Italy, Naples, Milan and Rome.

Entrance   $5 for existing Dante’s student

Playgroup for 0-5 year olds

Every Thursday morning Dante holds a playgroup in Auckland for babies and toddlers where they can play and sing songs in Italian. It is open to everyone - you don't have to speak Italian, though most of the children have at least one parent who is Italian. There are two teachers who lead the activities, but most mums and dads stay with their children and join in with the songs and games.

Ci incontriamo a Freemans Bay tutti i giovedi'.

Each session begins with some free play - the kids love the toy kitchen and the books - then we all sit in cicle to sing our favourite children's songs. The songs are great for learning and reinforcing vocabulary in Italian with lots of repetition of key words, especially colours, numbers, parts of the body.

We stop singing for merenda (morning tea) - every child brings a lunchbox - and the mums, dads, grandparents and teachers have a chat over some coffee. Then there is usually time for one or two games, and a chance to choose a children's book or two to borrow for the week.

After everything is packed up, most of us meet again at the playground just outside the room we use for the playgroup for some extra playtime (and chatting time).

Venite a giocare con noi! Ci divertiamo tantissimo.

La Dante ha una nuova biblioteca! (Scroll down for English)

from now on Dante’s Library will have a new and easier system to
lend and return books.
We also have a new librarian, Matteo Telara, who will be available
twice per week - (day and time still to decide) to answer any questions and requests,
or to help you find the right book.
It will also be possible to contact Matteo by email:
Every two weeks, Matteo will also recommend a book and talk about it on this blog.
Italian authors in English, both Italian and foreign authors in Italian, novels,
short stories, essays, books for children and young adults, didactic material
and bestsellers. The new Dante library aims to become a centre of reference,
not only for the Italian community of Auckland, but also for anyone else
interested in Italian literature and culture.
The Dante Committee would also like to thank Italian language student and Dante member Amanda Day for helping Matteo with the cataloguing work.

Salute!
On Friday evening we enjoyed a wonderful event about Puglia. We started with a slide show and talk about the Region's beautiful architecture by John Anderson. Then we had an amazing Mediterranean supper with a selection of traditional cheeses made by professional cheese maker Massimiliano De Caro (Massimiliano has been making mozzarella and other cheeses for 20 years) and a glass or red wine. And when our bellies were full and our spirits high Massimiliano showed us how to stretch mozzarella, and talked about the other cheeses he makes, like ricotta with chives and scamorza.

The Dante Auckland would like to thank Italy Star NZ president Gary Russell for the kind invitation, Karen Holland and Jim Hight of Matavino for the wine, the ladies from the Italy Star and Kinder House for supper, the speakers for the evening, and all the attendees.

Autumn in Italy as I remember it: castagne e porcini

I grew up in the Apennine mountains of Italy, here, and during Autumn and Winter I ate chestnuts almost every day. In Autumn I used to walk almost every afternoon to our family's chestnut wood, called Casturia, to pick chestnuts. It was a 3 km walk, downhill, and then back, uphill, with a bag full of castagne. Many families have a chestnut wood in my village, now that I live here in New Zealand I let some friends and relatives pick chestnuts and mushrooms in my woods, but it is always great to go back there to find the old trees and paths of my childhood. And if I go foraging with my Dad's cousin Mario, chances are that we also find a lot of porcini mushrooms (he is a very good mushroom hunter, I am not!).

Casturia, the chestnut wood in Poggioraso, Sestola.

There are also porcini mushrooms
Tagliatelle with fresh porcini mushrooms

I am lucky enough to have a friend in Chirstchurch who also happens to be a good mushroom hunter, and he gave me some porcini (not the same as the Italian ones, but very similar), but I am looking for a place to go and pick chestnuts near Auckland, if you have any idea please let me know. For now I leave you with a recipe that calls for chestnut flour, yet another ingredient that I am still trying to find in NZ.

Chestnut flour fritters

Frittelle di Castagne
Appennino Modenese
Emilia Romagna
Recipe from Alessandra Zecchini

These fritters were a staple in my family, they are easy to make and incredibly filling.

Mix 250g of chestnut flour with 400ml of water, mix well and add a tablespoon of sultana.

With a spoon drop some batter into the hot oil (I used rice bran oil) and cook on both sides; it only takes a couple of minutes.

Place the fritter on a paper towel to absorb the excess oil.

These fritters are actually better cold, just by themselves, or with a little ricotta cheese.
