Auckland says farewell to H.E. Carmelo Barbarello, Ambassador of Italy

On Monday 5th September we said goodbye to H.E. Carmelo Barbarello, Ambassador of Italy, leaving his post and New Zealand to return to Rome.

The Ambassador organised an aperitif at the Northern Club, were Italians and Kiwis from Auckland mingled and had a last chance to say farewell. During his two years in New Zealand Carmelo Barbarello managed to do so much for our community and everyone present was sad to see him leave. We will also miss his warm personality and readiness to help.

For the occasion the Ambassador was also presented with a traditional Sardinia nuptial bread by the visiting delegation of Luna Nuova (you will be able to learn more about these breads during this free lecture on 21 September, and during a special exhibition at the Festival Italiano).

The Dante Alighieri Society of Auckland wishes all the best to Carmelo Barbarello in his future postings in Rome and overseas, and we look forward to meet the new Ambassador at the Festival Italiano on 25th September.

Free University Lecture - Anthropology of Bread in the Mediterranean Universe: the Art of Making Bread in Sardinia

Meet the Sardinian delegation of Luna Nuova, for the first time in New Zealand, for a lecture in Italian and English about the traditional Sardinian nuptial breads, presented by Prof. Battista Saiu, anthropologist, University of Eastern Piedmont (Università del Piemonte Orientale).

Making ritual bread to celebrate crucial life events – birth, marriage, death—is part of Sardinia’s ancient tradition. The ritual bread’s wide variety of shapes shows both centuries-old creativity and expertise in the Sardinian craft tradition. Different bread shapes, such as crowns, baskets, flowers and leaves, express people’s feelings or the patterns of nature and of life.

21 September 2016 - 5pm
University of Auckland
Arts1 Building 206, Rooms 203,
14A Symonds Street.
Auckland

Free entry

In Sardinia, ritual, ceremonial and votive breads are made in the shape of crowns, baskets, flowers, leaves, and birds for special occasions such as weddings, religious celebrations and other exceptional events. They are symbols of an ancient and new religiosity, inherited from the past through oral tradition and gestures.

The art of bread making is a precious part of Sardinian folklore and history. Simple nourishment, but with a high symbolic value, bread has been among the basic elements of the Sardinian diet since time immemorial. As well as everyday shapes, we can find elaborate and decorated shapes for every major family or community celebration. It’s possible to count several thousand different breads produced in Sardinia, differing in shape, kind of flour, and purpose: everyday, ceremonial, votive, ritual. Through these breads, thanks to the thousands of years of tradition, we hear the ancient languages of the people who have inhabited the Sardinian countryside since at least 3000 BC. Amongst them, we will see bread for the souls of the dead, different nuptial breads and the blessed bread for the Christian Easter and for Holy Communion.

Matteo interviews Italian writer Nicola Lagioia (Premio Strega 2015)

images

Festival Italiano Special: Food and rituals of Luna Nuova – Exhibition of the Sardinian nuptial breads and Launeddas (Sardinian flute) music

Visit the Luna Nuova Stand at the Festival Italiano to see these beautiful nuptial breads and learn about their history and meaning. A cultural delegation is coming all the way from Sardinia to present the Sardinian art of baking nuptial breads to and play the traditional flute Launeddas.

The Sardinian nuptial bread is rich of symbolism. Traditionally a bride had to demonstrate her baking knowledge, which was passed down from generation to generation. The future wife also had to prove her artistic skills in shaping and decorating the bread.

Each different shape of nuptial bread carry its own symbolism, and the heart shape is almost always present and offered to the couple to be hung on the headboard of the wedding bed.

Nuptial breads would be prepared and packed three days before the wedding by the bride to be, her girlfriends and her female relatives, surrounded of Launeddas musician and dancing.
